It’s always nice to beat your in-state rivals, but it’s even nicer to dominate the way Houston did against a North Texas team that has been one of the best in MLS NEXT Pro.
This game featured several first team players including Tate Schmitt, Gabe Segal, and Jefferson Valverde. Both sides traded blows in the first couple of minutes, which is expected; it was Houston who struck first thanks to a slick pass from Valverde to Mattheo Dimareli, who then delivered a cheeky finish over the goalkeeper.
The rest of the first half was highly contested, with North Texas SC bending but not breaking to Houston’s high press. Nico Hansen was able to come up with some saves in order to keep Houston ahead.
Entering the half, DynaDos had all the momentum, and they were poised to increase their advantage and win this rivalry match.
Houston was able to double their lead in the 61st minute thanks to Diego Gonzalez, who delivered the assist, and Gabe Segal, who was at the right place at the right time. Just like that, DynaDos was in the driver’s seat in this miniature Texas Derby matchup.
It only got better from there thanks to Isaiah Reid, who scored in the 64th minute. Kenny Bundy’s side were running away with the match at this point. Reid also celebrated with his classic “drip” move, and the entire Dynamo bench joined along with it.
In the 77th minute, Gabe Segal got his second of the match from long range. Aside from Diego Gonzalez, he was the best player of the game, and his runs were spectacular. With Ezequiel Ponce now with the team, Segal will have an uphill battle if he wants to return to the first team.
The rest of the game went by quickly, as North Texas was completely deflated thanks to Houston’s barrage of goals. The game ended with Houston winning convincingly with a final score of 4-0.
Now, Kenny Bundy and this motivated DynaDos team will turn their attention to LAFC 2 on July 28. Tickets are free and available down below.
