The Leagues Cup, which made headlines around the world last summer thanks to Lionel Messi, will be back this summer. The tournament just announced the groups, and we are going to see some tasty match-ups between MLS and Liga MX sides.

Javier Chicharito Hernández, who was just unveiled as new Chivas player, will be returning to LA to take on the Galaxy— the club where he spent the last four seasons. Cade Cowell, another brand new Chivas player, will also be facing his former club as he will be returning home to San Jose Earthquakes.

We will then see Messi’s defending champions Inter Miami taking on Tigres, a club that also made some shiny signings of their own in recent years— with the most notable one being the Frenchman André-Pierre Gignac.

All 47 MLS and Liga MX teams are participating with three teams in 15 groups. The two remaining teams, MLS champions Columbus Crew and Liga MX champions Club América, get an automatic bye into the Round of 32.

There will be some changes in this year’s tournament. To many fans’ disappointment, there will still be no games in Mexico. However, Club América and the three top-ranked Liga MX clubs will be given certain privileges— such as less travel and the possibility of playing in predetermined venues as the “home” team.

The tournament will start in late July, just a couple weeks after the Copa América final. It’s a chance for fans to continue enjoying the summer of fútbol in the U.S.
