Why U.S. Soccer Will NEVER Compete — Until This Mentality Changes
In this episode of Unleashed, Eric Wynalda dives headfirst into the brutal truths holding American soccer back — from the flawed academy system to the delusional stance on promotion and relegation.
Eric takes on the myth of "greedy" MLS owners, explains why solidarity payments matter, and calls out the dangerous shift from results to opinions in youth development. He even gives shoutouts to the real winners from the Generation Adidas Cup — including a familiar face from Las Vegas.
If you believe U.S. soccer has untapped potential, this one's for you. But be warned: Wynalda doesn’t pull punches.

I was just wondering and I don’t know much about soccer and I am a huge fan of your podcast. Been listening to you since my son started playing soccer He’s 12 now and just made his first competitive soccer team Florida Premier FC although it’s not ECNL I definitely see where the pay to play is failing our youth it’s a lot of money to pay and not get the results you look for now. I’m the parent that stays out of the way because I don’t know anything about soccer. I was a baseball player, but my comment basically is why not like you said and like a lot of people with soccer experience has said why not have the community support the club for example Florida DoPremier FC the one that my son plays for is in Temple Terrace, Florida right next to Tampa why not have the team market themselves obviously in the Tampa area but more in the temple Terrace area since it’s in their community you have social media YouTube flyers kind of rally the community around what these kids are doing for their community educate the community on what you’re trying to achieve with the kids that are playing soccer and educate as well the community about the difference they can make in their community by helping under privileged families with 5 10 20 100 1000 dollars it doesn’t matter but something is better than nothing, and you can put back into the club for players who don’t have the money to pay to play that’s why we have things like GoFundMe in my opinion that can take a couple a long way if the community backs them up and feels like they’re a part of that club
