The rumors are true. 

20 year old Alyssa Thompson, for plays for Angel City FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), is reportedly leaving the NWSL to head across the pond. Chelsea is offering Thompson a five year deal, reportedly over $1 million, to join the Women’s Super League (WSL). The transfer fee, if as reported, would break the record previously set by the same club. Chelsea paid $1.1 million dollars for United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) player and defender, Naomi Girma. She was previously playing at the San Diego Wave FC in the NWSL when she transferred in January 2025. Girma, who is 24 years old, beefs the back line of Chelsea after one of their players suffered an ACL injury. This made Girma one of the highest paid players in the WSL. 

Now Thompson may join similar ranks as Girma in terms of pay, especially when the rumor is Thompson has signed a 5 year contract with Chelsea. Fans certainly had a lot to say once the rumor hit the news cycle, as Thompson is viewed as the face of Angel City. She is a home grown talent, a number one draft pick in 2023, and debuted for the USWNT at age 17 in 2022. It will be a tough loss for fans in Los Angeles, and certainly saddening to see the Thompson sisters separated. Thompson also recently signed a new deal through 2028 with Angel City, and her sister, and that adds to the transfer fee price. 

2025 has been the year of record breaking transfers in women’s soccer. The Orlando Pride recently set a record of their own when they acquired Lizbeth Ovalle from the Liga MX Femenil team Tigres Femenil. Ovalle was a $1.5 million acquisition for the club, who recently had star striker Barbara Banda go on season ending injury for an avulsion of her right adductor longus tendon. 

 Chelsea is showing the world how much pull they have world wide in soccer. Sam Kerr is returning, after being out on injury. Mayra Ramirez is rehabbing her recent hamstring surgery. Chelsea also won their sixth successive WSL title, with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in April 2025.
