The Kansas City Current recently clinched their playoff spot in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). This comes to no surprise as the Current have had another outstanding NWSL season for the 2025 year. They currently stand at number one in the NWSL, 14 points above the next team currently in second which is the Washington Spirit.

Their lead above the other teams has been season long. Their record currently stands at winning 15 games, one draw, and two losses. They lost once to the North Carolina Courage and once to the Seattle Reign FC. The Spirit is currently sitting, at the time of publication, of 9 wins and 5 draws and four losses.

The Current have a special squad, featuring 2024 Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga. Chawinga is currently in the race again to win the Golden Boot award, tied with Gotham FC forward Esther. Chawinga is the fastest player to score 30 regular season goals in her first season in 2024

“Chawinga’s game-winning goal against the Utah Royals in Week 15 was her 10th goal of the season and her 30th career regular season goal since joining the NWSL”

“Believe it or not, it’s been just 40 games of Chawinga in Kansas City, and her 30 goals in that timeframe makes her the fastest player in league history to reach the milestone. The record was previously held by Christen Press, who scored 30 goals in 51 games”

Chawinga has also been nominated for the prestigious Balon d’or award. But it isn’t just Chawinga that makes the Current so unstoppable. Captain Lo’eau Labonta is seen as a cornerstone player for the team. LaBonta has scored a total of 13 penalty kicks in her career, tied with colleague Marta and one goal behind the number one spot held by retired Seattle Reign player Megan Rapinoe. Her most recent penalty kick would also mark the 20th career regular season goal LaBonta has scored for the Current.

They also benefit from being coached by Vlatko Andonovski, who led the Current in 2024 to the Championship against Orlando and was named June 2025 Coach of the Month for the NWSL.In an article from Forbes, Vlatko credited the head space of the team as a factor in their winning.

“We’re playing in a good form, we’re winning games in different ways,” said Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Our goal is to come out as a group and to be the best that we possibly can be in every game we play. We’ve operated like that for a year and a half and we’re only focused on being the best we can be in this game.”

All eyes are on the Current with two months left before playoffs. Will we see another championship for Andonovski? Only time will tell.
